Maya Hayuk

Maya Hayuk is an internationally celebrated Ukrainian American contemporary artist and activist best known for her massive, iconic, abstract murals seen on every continent but Antartica. Reflections on the deep symbolism found in ethnography, vexillology, and the Tryzub (Ukrainian Trident) are reproportioned to a massive scale, calling to attention themes on identity, tradition, and progress. Hayuk’s work is represented in numerous public and private collections and has been the subject of one-person exhibitions and commis- sions, including the Brooklyn Museum; MassArt Art Museum, Boston; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and many others.

In 2018, Hayuk gave a TEDx Talk from the Center of Art and Design in Brussels, called “Trust Fall,” recounting her developing career. For the fall semester of 2021, Hayuk was a visiting artist and scholar at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Masters of Architecture program. Hayuk maintains an independent studio practice in Brooklyn, New York, and is represented by ALICE Gallery in Brussels and GROWROOM//SHOWROOM in Brooklyn.

I hope that my artwork speaks to a wider, younger, more diverse audience. The super DIY nature of the artwork and campaign should feel super democratic—like we actually have control and agency in the elections.
